The Road

Where are some of the places I will travel in the Vehicle, and what are some of the challenges of the road...and the sea?

Special GPS for RVs

New Orleans, Louisiana

Picture
New Orleans feels like the border of North America and th Caribbean to me.  It's a city rich in cultures of resistance and histories of struggle, and a place I want to get to know a whole lot better.

Institute of American Indian Arts
Santa Fe, New Mexico

Among my many plans is a semester or two at IAIA, where I would love to study indigenous map making and explore the traditional arts of my Taino ancestors.

Detroit, Michigan

Seattle and Mt. Rainier

I have a lot of people I enjoy in Seattle.  I imagine parking in Mt. Rainier National Park and bopping into the city to visit Elliot Bay Books, eat sushi and talk for hours.

Host the Vehicle

I'm starting to compile my list of places to park, for a few days, a few weeks, maybe even a few months.  Do you have an extra long, wide driveway?  A piece of land, a big urban lot, a possible arts residency site?   With truck and trailer combined I need about 48' of length and the option to plug into the grid with a long power cord if I need the extra energy. I'm especially interested in spots in or near cities where I have community or am trying to build it.

Here's my developing wish list:
Places where I have roots and/or strong community:
California:  The Bay Area and rural areas up to two hours away.
Washington: In or near Seattle.
Minnesota: Twin Cities and pretty places to the north, especially near lakes and rivers.
Illinois:  Chicago spots for short stays.
New York City:  This is a hard one, because there aren't legal RV spots within the city, and the Long Island Expressway doesn't allow RVs, so I'm probably looking at outlying spots on train lines.
District of Columbia/Maryland/Virginia: Pretty places near DC.

Places where I have a few people and want more:
North Carolina: Durham
Georgia:  Atlanta
Louisiana:  New Orleans and Barataria-Terrebonne stuary
New Mexico: Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Taos
Oregon: Portland, Eugene
New York:  The northern and western parts.
Vermont: Burlington, Rutland, Brattleboro
New Hampshire: Franconia Notch area, North Conway area

Places I really want to get to know better
Louisiana: Rest of Gulf Coast
Texas: San Antonio, Austin
Missouri: St. Louis
Florida: Central region where the Puerto Ricans are concentrated, both the ocean and gulf coasts, and the Everglades.
Georgia: Sea Islands

Kinds of Places I'm super interested in
ALL NATIONAL PARKS AND FORESTS
University/ College parking lots where I speak, teach, or am an artist in residence.
Private property where I can join a household or community for a while.

Places I have individual offers:
Caribou, Maine
Columbia, South Carolina
Sisters, Oregon

International Dream Destinations

If I figure out how to ship the Vehicle without it being contaminated by pesticides and other toxic stuff.

Cuba

Picture
A Cuban country road.  Pretend that's my vehicle parked in the distance.  If I can run it on sunshine and water, it'll be very well suited for the Cuban climate, and may inspire imitation.

Argentina

Picture

I'd love to visit my Argentinian friends and relatives, and drive this road, Hwy 23.

Iberia (Spain and Euskadi)
