Desk/Bulletin Board
I plan to have a portion of my desk that when folded up, covers one of my bookshelves and provides a bulletin board wall space, and when folded down, creates an "L" shaped desk when I need to spread out.
Pull Out Furniture
I love pull outs! We're installing two pull out pantries to store non-perishable food in a small space next to my refrigerator, a pull out cutting board, and a small pull out ironing board. Below are examples of pull out and fold down drying racks.
Accordion Chair!

The Flexible Love chair is an ingenious piece of furniture made of paper honeycomb and rigid end boards, a bit like those expanding party decorations that unfold into globes and then fold flat. It can be a chair, a circular bench, a sofa, a playpen... My only question is about the toxins involved in paper manufacturing. Paper mills produce a lot of dioxin and making honeycomb requires adhesives. Paper is also very susceptible to mold, so ingenious as the idea is, I decided against it.
Slid outs and Pop-ups

Slide outs are part time extensions to the interiors of RVs, little rooms that slide out of the basic frame of the vehicle to create more room when stationary. Pop-ups are expanded roofs. They fall somewhere between outer structure and furnishing, because temporary rooms shape interior space and somecan include built-in furniture.
Most of the slide-out options invented for RVs involve toxic plastics like vinyl, or require lubrication/treatment with potentially toxic substances, and have a high risk of water leaking in, which would be disastrous, given my sensitivity to molds. I'm interested in the possibilities of expandable space, but have chosen a fold down exterior deck as an external living room.

Hammocks are some of the oldest flexible furniture. All you need are two hooks, or properly spaced trees or posts. For my birthday, my brother and sister-in-law gave me a gorgeous, parrot colored hammock, hand made by the Hernandez family of Humacao, Puerto Rico.
